Tattoo Removal-The Technology and Effectiveness Has Come a Long Way in Recent Years
Tattoo removal dates back to ancient Egypt. It has been around almost as long as tattoos themselves. What has changed over the years is the advancement in technology for tattoo removal methods.
For years tattoo removal was quite painful, vulnerable to infection and often left a scar more unsightly than the tattoo itself. It was so painful that it often served as a deterrent to getting future tattoos!
Just in the last 15 years or so tattoo removal has taken a giant leap forward in the types of technology available that can yield very good results without the pain and scarring of the older methods.
Early tattoo removal solutions utilized procedures where skin was surgically removed and sewn back with stitches. Another early tattoo removal procedure was called dermabrasion which involved sanding off the primary layer of skin where the tattoo resided. This was prone to infection and quite often ended up looking worse than the tattoo ever would have.
In the mid 1980’s tattoo removal took a huge step forward into the future with laser technology. By projecting pulses of laser light onto the site of the tattoo, dermatologists could break up the ink that lies on the secondary layer of the skin, or dermis, without tampering with the epidermis, or primary layer of the skin. This procedure drastically reduced the cases of infection and horrible scarring and the satisfaction of patients skyrocketed.
Although very effective, laser tattoo removal does have limitations. Some colors are more difficult to remove than others. Black is the easiest color to remove with green being the most difficult. It can also take a long time requiring several sessions with periods of healing required between sessions.
There is some pain associated with the laser procedure, often described as that of pin pricks. But then everyone has their own threshold for pain acceptance.
If the length of time or the pain is a concern, the other method today for tattoo removal is done with creams. This is more of a fade process than total removal. But in many cases the tattoo creams like those offered from a very popular company, Wrecking Ball can be quite effective.
The creams fade procedures can be done in the privacy of your home; they
are painless and cost a lot less than the laser method. Many people take the approach of trying the cream method first and if that doesn’t work then they go the route of the more costly laser treatment.
Whatever procedure you decide try, at least you can enter into it with confidence and knowing that the effectiveness and technology for tattoo removal has come a long way in the last few years.
